Groupon Raising Up to $950 Million in Funding [UPDATED]

Groupon has filed for a Series G funding round that authorizes it to raise up to $950 million, according to a new report. The new round of funding comes just weeks after the group-buying website rejected a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google.
According to VC Expert, Groupon filed for a certificate to authorize the Series G round last week (an amended certificate of incorporation) and will be filing another document next week outlining the exact amount it intends to raise. We’re working to get our hands on those documents now.

If the report is accurate, Groupon’s post-money valuation would be somewhere between $6.4 billion to $7.8 billion. It’s not clear who is participating in the round, nor is it clear how far along Groupon is in the fundraising process. However, today’s news lays the groundwork for what could be one of the biggest venture capital rounds in history.

Google Launches Maps 5.0 for Android

Google Maps 5.0 – the new version of the app that was recently demoed at the Le Web as well as D: Dive into Mobile conference – is now available for download in the Android Market.

Two big new features in this release are 3D view and offline rerouting. The 3D view uses vector graphics to dynamically draw the map on the screen of your device. You can tilt it, rotate it and smoothly zoom in and out the map with finger gestures. Another new feature is the compass mode, which will make the map rotate to match your perspective, so you can get a better idea of where you are.


Also, you don’t have to worry (so much) about being offline, as the app now caches the areas next to the one you’re currently in, meaning you’ll be able to seamlessly keep navigating for a while even when offline. If you’re using Google’s turn-by-turn GPS navigation, the app can now calculate a different route, even if you’re offline. You still need a connection to start a route, however. This feature will be rolled out gradually over the next couple of weeks.
The new version of Google Maps will work on Android 1.6 devices, but only owners of Android 2.0+ devices will be able to enjoy the new 3D and offline capabilities.

It appears that many of the millions of people who rely on Skype are having issues accessing the service this morning.
 

On its Twitter account, the company acknowledged an issue, tweeting: “Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype – we’re investigating, and we’re sorry for the disruption to your conversations.”
Some of our staff are able to sign on, but are unable to see any of their contacts. Meanwhile, users are rapid fire tweeting about Skype’s downtime.

Last month, Skype hit a new usage record, hosting 25 million people on its service concurrently, speaking to both the ubiquity of the service and the problem created when it goes down. Let’s just hope this doesn’t rival the Skype outage of 2007, which saw the service down for an extended period of time.

Update (3:20 p.m. ET): Skype has posted an update on its blog, assuring users that the service should return in “a few hours.”

Update #2: Skype has explained today’s downtime on its blog, nothing that “Customers using the enterprise version of Skype for Windows may still experience delays signing in.”

Bank of America Blocks WikiLeaks Payments

Financial giant Bank of America has added its name to the list of institutions dropping support for WikiLeaks, announcing that it has stopped handling any payments to or from the whistle-blowing website.

Said the bank in a statement to the Charlotte Observer, “This decision is based upon our reasonable belief that WikiLeaks (Wikileaks) may be engaged in activities that are, among other things, inconsistent with our internal policies for processing payments.”


As the huge American financial institution confidently declared Saturday that it was standing against the website headed by controversial figure Julian Assange, his WikiLeaks organization fired back a Twitter post urging consumers to stop doing business with Bank of America. “We ask that all people who love freedom close out their accounts at Bank of America,” pleaded the WikiLeaks tweet.

Bank of America’s action is certain to tempt hackers who’ve named themselves “Operation Payback.” These supporters of WikiLeaks have been launching denial of service (DOS) attacks against institutions trying to thwart WikiLeaks for most of this month.

However, Rich Mogul, an analyst with the security firm Securosis, told Yahoo Finance, “Bank of America, I can guarantee you, is one of the top targets in the world.” He added that the bank is likely to have strong defenses, but couldn’t guarantee Bank of America could fend off any attack.

Even though the bank has lots of experience dealing with DOS attacks, today’s statement could result in a new wave of attempts at a security breach

Netflix Looking for Facebook

Netflix could be on its way to Facebook. Netflix hasn’t announced Facebook integration yet, but the company is hiring “a founding member of the new Social Systems engineering team at Netflix,” according to a recently posted job description.


Instead of sticking with the less-than-popular “Friends” feature Netflix abandoned a few months ago, it appears that the company might now tap into Facebook’s base of 550 million users, perhaps to “Like” and comment about movies they’ve seen.

The available position is listed on a Netflix job board as “Facebook Integration – Engineer/Architect,” and refers to building systems that use the Facebook social graph “to create a more social Netflix experience.”

Finally, Netflix gets with the Facebook program. This apparent development could make Netflix even more popular, adding to the explosive rise of the company’s streaming video services, the growth of which has nearly tripled in the past year.

YouTube Transforms Its Homepage Into a Giant Newsfeed

YouTube has unveiled a new version of its homepage with the singular goal of turning it into a destination rather than an afterthought.
YouTube has been quietly testing a new version of the homepage for over a month now, but starting today, the video website is letting all of its users opt into the new homepage. At first glance, it doesn’t look all that different — there aren’t any radical changes to the design. However, there have been several changes to the user interface that YouTube hopes will draw visitors to the homepage more regularly.


The biggest difference is the “combined list,” which is essentially a newsfeed combining your subscription, friend activity and recommendations. The company put all of these elements together because it wanted to make the experience simple and seamless, unlike the previous version, which is filled with recommendation boxes and pushes the newsfeed below the fold.

Personalization was also a focus of the homepage redesign. Videos can be deleted from your homepage, and videos you’ve already watched will be grayed out so you know what you still have left to watch. The new homepage also loads more video content, resurfaces your most recent liked and favorited videos and places links to your inbox and video comments more prominently.

YouTube Increases Upload Time Limit Even More

Impossibly long videos featuring cats repeatedly slamming into mirrors are about to get even longer, as YouTube has announced that it’s extending its upload time limit.


According to the YouTube blog, those users who have a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines and copyright rules will no longer be constrained by the 15-minute upload limit. YouTube (YouTube) doesn’t specify how long the upload limit will be, just that users can click the “Upload” button at the top of the site to see their accounts qualify.

In July, YouTube increased its upload time limit from 10 to 15 minutes, stating that it had been beefing up its copyright protection tools, i.e. the Content ID system (which lets copyright holders have more control over their content), making it less likely that users could upload large chunks of movies and TV shows without permission. The newly extended limit is also a result of advances in the video-sharing site’s copyright tools.

LeT planned to kill CM Modi using car: WikiLeaks

The United States diplomatic cables released by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks revealed that the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) had planned an attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.




The LeT planed the plot to assassinate Narendra modi just seven months after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack. The plan was to kill Modi was described as "operations…involving a car" in the diplomatic cable sent from the office of the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

The cable described that the plot on Modi was planned by a Pakistan LeT member Shafiq Khafa and scheduled to carry out by Indian LeT member Sameer Hussein.




The cable sent on Jun 2009 said, "LeT member Shafiq Khafa, possibly preparing for operation, and Hussein -- an India-based Lashkar-e-Taiba member -- continued operational planning on three tasks in early June. The tasks were associated with a possible operation against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, the establishment of a training camp and unspecified work involving a car. Hussein would coordinate his activities with an India-based colleague identified as Sameer."
